In contrast to line art, continuous tone presents diverse values of shades. In this case grey shades that recreate volume.
This illustration was created with a soft black pencil, a dry brush, and a tender eraser. They helped to "finish" the picture.

More colors

The same principle is applied when two or more colors are used. In this case, brown and black were mixed to create a duotone.
